Dr Andrew Hutchison

Andrew (Hutch) is a digital media visualisation specialist, with 40 years experience in using emerging technologies in data gathering and storytelling, with a particular interest in Marine Science and Underwater Cultural Heritage. In 2011, while working at Curtin University, he initiated and developed the Sydney Kormoran Project, to create high resolution imagery of the wrecks of HMAS Sydney and HSK Kormoran, Australian and German warships that simultaneously destroyed each other in the Indian ocean in 1941. The project also conducted “end of life” interviews with crew members who had served on HMAS Sydney before it was sunk, to bring a deeply personal aspect of life and loss in military service during wartime. In 2015, with corporate sponsorship and Australian Commonwealth grant funding, in collaboration with the West Australian Museum, the project photographed both shipwrecks, and produced a public exhibition. Andrew brings significant experience in Photogrammetry/3D reconstruction skills, and well as contributing to other aspects of the GIRT program.
